Dr. Willard Celebrates National Pet Day with New Line of Compassionate Pet Products

Did you know that April 11th was National Pet Day? My adoptive family, The Willards, and I celebrated the weekend holiday by taking a nice walk through a local park, eating bagels (not too much for me unfortunately!) and going for a nice ride with my head out the window. It was a glorious day!

Spending our holiday together reminded us that we want to urge all pet owners to celebrate the special love that animals offer to their owners. As a rescue myself, I was fortunate to be saved by a pet foundation, Big Dogs Huge Paws, after years of being neglected and abused in my former household. Now, I have been happily residing with a family that loves me, and, most importantly, takes care of me.

Most pet owners do their best to provide a nurturing environment for their dogs and cats. Unfortunately, not many of them know the importance of selecting natural pet products for their furry friends. When entering a pet store, people are confronted with a variety of choices for food and care for their dogs; however, not all pet products are created the same. This is why, in honor of National Pet Day, I have decided to share the Willard family’s tips for providing natural pet care to dogs.

Aspen’s Tips for Natural Pet Nutrition

Feeding your dogs a diet full of natural, fresh and nutritious foods is vital to their health. According to PetMD, dogs can consume meat, grains and vegetables just as humans; however, their meals need to be adjusted based on three factors: age, activity level, and ideal weight. Obviously, bigger dogs need more food than smaller ones, but other factors, such as how active the pet is, also affect portion size. The site recommends consulting with a vet to find out the appropriate portion size and ideal diet for your pet.

One of the most important choices when it comes to feeding your pet is decide what to put on his plate. Some owners choose to make their own pet food so they know exactly what ingredients will be inside. If you choose to go this route, make sure to speak to your vet first to find out how many calories the meals need to consist of. If you decide to purchase the food, make sure to check the label! With the current natural trend, any brand of pet food can market itself as natural. However, since there is no official monitoring of the language, that term does not always truly describe the ingredients, which may contain harmful toxins such as pesticides, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), etc. If possible, purchase organic food staples that are monitored by the FDA. As an added boost for your pet’s health, add Dr. Willard’s Vibrant Pet Water Drops to your dog’s food or water. These drops have been shown to help with digestion, nutrient absorption, behavior and performance.

Aspen’s Tips for Natural Pet Care

As important as it is to choose natural food to feed your dog, it is also vital to purchase toxin-free products to care for your dog.

Shampoo: When choosing shampoo and conditioners for pets, find ones without any chemicals. Ottawa Valley Dog Whisperer lists dozens of ingredients to avoid in pet shampoos, such as artificial fragrances, triclosan, phthalates, etc. The site also gives an easy recipe to make a holistic do-it-yourself pet wash using just castile soap and lavender essential oils.

Vitamins: We know that vitamins are beneficial for our health, and so many of us also give them to our pets. Whether purchasing supplements, or dog food that is fortified with vitamins, diligence is required to make sure synthetic alternatives are not being given to our dogs. For example, a lot of dog food is fortified with synthetic Vitamins A and D; however it is fairly common for pets to get an overdose of these fake supplements, leading to issues such as bone loss, dry skin and issues with the heart and kidneys, according to Dogs Naturally Magazine. Talk to your vet to determine if your pets need additional vitamins; most likely a balanced diet will take care of their needs.

Coat Sprays: There are a multitude of products on the market that promise to improve the look of your dog’s coat. However, many of them are full of harsh ingredients that can be detrimental to pets’ health. Pet owners and vets around the country have reported their dogs experiencing skin irritation and much harsher side effects from chemicals in these products. To avoid this, make sure to use only all-natural and non-toxic ingredients, such as Dr. Willard’s Rejuvenating Skin and Coat Spray® and Dr. Willard’s Soothing Aloe Gel for Pets®. Our cruelty-free products will help your pet achieve a beautiful coat, while also helping with skin ailments.

Additionally, I want to remind you for the recent launch of our very own Dr. Willard’s® pet line, inspired by yours truly, called the Dr. Willard’s Natural Restorative Pet Care® Kit. Dog owners should place a dime or quarter size amount of on the affected area of the dog and/or use as a general moisturizer.

While it is important to celebrate our pets during National Pet Day, we should appreciate them all year long. To properly take care your pet, read labels and research any ingredients that you don’t know to make sure that you are providing the best possible care for your pet.
