The Dangers of Using Chemical Fertilizers

For the last several decades chemical and nitrogen-based fertilizers have been the primary mechanism farmers have used to increase yield and profit per acre.  Today, the vast majority of large-scale farming operations use commercial fertilizers like mined phosphorus, a necessary but non-renewable fertilizer, and ammonium polyphosphate, a synthetic phosphorus fertilizer that has become highly expensive.

The effect of excess fertilizer on our waterways has been environmentally devastating and is only getting worse.  It’s toxic to consume drinking water that has been contaminated by fertilizer run off. We’re learning that agricultural overuse of fertilizer has contaminated the drinking water of whole regions of California. Meanwhile, nitrogen that runs into the ocean causes oxygen-depleted “dead zones” around the world. The dead zone in our own Gulf Of Mexico (measured every summer) keeps getting larger — last year it was the size of New Jersey.

Researchers are now also learning that using nitrogen based fertilizers are becoming major contributors to problems associated with greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere.  The amount of nitrous oxide — the gas emitted by nitrogen-based fertilizers—is the third most potent greenhouse gas in the atmosphere, behind carbon dioxide and methane. The levels of nitrous oxide in the atmosphere are increasing fast and will cause irreparable damage if something isn’t done soon.

Not only are these chemical fertilizers bad for the environment, they’re also becoming much more expensive as we deplete the supply of raw materials needed to manufacture them.  More and more farmers, countries, aid organizations have come to the realization that the current model is unsustainable and are actively embracing alternatives to chemical inputs.

All About PlantCatalyst®

Used by farmers worldwide for over 40 years, Dr. Willard’s PlantCatalyst® is a variation of our proprietary formula, Dr. Willard’s Water®, but is designed and government-approved to be used on plants. This product helps to promote plants’ cellular absorption of nutrients through nutrient blends and fertilizers. This, in turn, helps to grow stronger, healthier, and more abundant plants.

PlantCatalyst® helps plants process nutrients faster which produces better germination rates, stronger plants, greater resistance to stressful conditions, faster growing times, and significant increases in yield.  Dr. Willard’s PlantCatalyst® also enhances nutrient absorption to such a degree that fertilizer amounts can be greatly reduced by at least 50% without sacrificing yield.  Independent studies (see below) demonstrate that reducing fertilizer by up to 50% and adding PlantCatalyst® increases plant yield substantially.

A recent series of studies firmly demonstrated that pairing the catalyst with various fertilizers significantly stimulates plant growth and yield.  In 2011-2012 Dr. Al Knauf, a Professor of Biology at Texas Women’s University, conducted several studies on the catalyst that explored dilution amounts, effects on various microbes, and ability to enhance commercial fertilizers.  In all cases, Dr. Knauf noted that adding the catalyst significantly increased efficacy of all solutions and in particular, stimulated plant growth, development and yield with lower dilutions of fertilizers.  In 2013 and 2014, Dr. Neil Reese, a Professor of Plant Physiology and Biochemistry at South Dakota State University (SDSU), built upon Dr. Knauf’s findings by conducting a series of experiments in a hydroponic greenhouse environment.  Reese’s findings, which have been submitted for publication to the American Journal of Plant Nutrition and Fertilization Technology, showed that adding two ounces of CAW’s PlantCatalyst® to the water reservoir on a weekly basis increased seed germination by up to 10%, reduced growing times by as much as six days, and increased yield on lettuce by 14%, tomatoes by 24%, bell peppers by 48% and jalapeno peppers by 52%.  While reducing fertilizer was not the primary goal of either of these studies, both found that it was in fact necessary to reduce fertilizer dilutions in order to maximize the catalyst’s effectiveness.
