Boost the Immune System this season!

Improve Your Family’s Well-Being During Back to School Season

Back to school time is exciting for the whole family; kids are thrilled to reconnect with their school friends, and parents are happy their children will be learning and expanding their minds. However, colder weather and exposure to other kids’ germs in the classroom often results in many missed days of school. September is the perfect time to learn how to improve your family’s well-being by boosting the immune system. Dr. Willard’s® will explain how to maximize well-being with the right diet and drinking Willard Water®!

What is the Immune System?

In order to learn how to help the immune system function better, it’s important to understand what the immune system is. It is a network of tissues, cells and organs that protect our body from bacteria and infections that can get us sick. When our immune system doesn’t work as it should, all types of foreign invaders take over and make us ill. When the immune system is strong, it defends us against invaders, keeping us healthy.

Ways to Boost the Immune System

Eating a diet packed with fruits, vegetables and healthy grains is the best way to improve the immune system. Purchase, organic, raw and local ingredients, if possible, to avoid toxins and pesticides in many common foods. Make sure to include some greens with every meal, and cut out sugars as much as possible. Choose foods that contain beneficial vitamins and antioxidants.

Antioxidants are vitamins, enzymes and nutrients that prevent oxidation from occurring in our bodies. Our metabolism, the sun’s UV rays, pollution, simple aging and inflammation can cause us to age quicker and get sick by the creation of free radicals. These particles are made from unstable molecules that destroy healthy DNA, proteins and cells, causing oxidation.

By eating the right foods and taking vitamins, we can increase the amount of antioxidants, thereby improving our body’s ability to fight off diseases. For example, eating nuts and seeds will increase your Vitamin E levels, a type of antioxidant. Consuming lemons, oranges, broccoli and bean sprouts will increase your levels of another antioxidant, Vitamin C. Instead of purchasing sugar-laden juices or sodas for your family, make green tea, which is also packed with antioxidants.

The problem is that our bodies are not able to absorb all the antioxidants we consume, flushing a big portion away through urination. However, adding Willard Water® to your daily routine will help with the absorption of antioxidants. In fact, a study done by NIS Laboratories showed that Willard Water® significantly increased the absorption of a number of antioxidants, especially tocotrienols (Vitamin E) and those found in green tea. The NIS study also found that cellular antioxidant protection under stressful conditions was enhanced when Willard Water® was paired with green tea antioxidants; which means that our formula helped the green tea antioxidants combat the effects of stress on the cells.

It can often be difficult to get family members, especially small children, to eat their daily portions of vegetables and fruits. Great workarounds are making healthy and delicious alternatives that contain these nutrients, such as juices, smoothies and popsicles.

Instead of purchasing store-bought juice, which is full of sugar, syrups and concentrates, make your own fresh-squeezed juice at home or purchase cold-pressed juices, which are made without high-powered blades that destroy all the nutrients. Mix fruits such as apples, oranges and watermelon with vegetables, such as carrots, chard and kale for a nutritious boost.

A Revamped Orange Juice Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 8 medium carrots
  • 1 pear
  • 1 lemon
  • 1-inch (2.5 cm) piece of ginger
  • 3 – 4 kale leaves (optional — I left them out because I wanted the pretty orange color!)

Directions:

  1. Wash all produce well.
  2. Peel the lemon.
  3. Add all ingredients through juicer and enjoy!

If you don’t want to invest in juicer, make a nutritious smoothie in your blender. If you have a powerful blender, you can even add nuts, such as peanuts and walnuts, to your smoothie for a protein boost. If you don’t, just add peanut or almond butter!
