June 23 is the 19th annual Take Your Dog to Work Day (TYDTWDay®). This day was created by Pet Sitters International (PSI) to promote pet adoptions by highlighting all the perks of dog ownership.
While many pet awareness days are targeted to potential pet owners, Take Your Dog to Work Day targets business owners and employers to support the pet community by opening up their offices to dogs for just one day. This day follows Take Your Pet To Work Week™, which is held on June 19-23 to encourage awareness for all pets, not just dogs.
The main idea behind Take Your Dog to Work Day is that individuals who don’t have dogs will be able to see the special relationship their co-workers have with their pets, and will consider adopting a pet into their home.
There is a growing movement worldwide to bring dogs into work. In fact, eight percent of US companies allowed employees to bring pets to work in 2015. These include well-known firms such as Google, Amazon, Petco and Etsy.
“Employers are starting to realize that [bringing] … a pet to work, you wind up getting a more focused employee, you get someone more comfortable at the office and a person willing to work longer hours,” said Bob Vetere, president and CEO of the American Pet Products Association,in an article on cnbc.com.
Benefits of Bringing Dogs to Work
While some employers may believe that bringing pets to work will distract staff, the actual has been found to be true. Dogs in the workplace offer many benefits, such as:
Increased Productivity – Having a dog next to them will encourage workers to take short breaks throughout the working day, which has been shown to prevent over tiredness and increase productivity.
Reduced Stress Levels – Dogs are able to reduce their owner’s stress levels and anxiety, and can even alleviate symptoms of depression, according to helpguide.org. Bringing a dog to work will improve the company culture by creating happy and calm employees.
Improved Health – WebMD states that dogs offer several health benefits, such as lowering blood pressure and improving the immune system. This will lead to less staff getting sick, which is a benefit for the company, as they it will lessen the amount of employees calling in sick.
Improved Communication – Most people love dogs, and a colleague that brings in their furry friend to work will surely attract attention. Through this act, this individual will likely meet new people who stop by to pet the dog, improving morale and team building in the office.
A celebration of the companionship between canine and human, National Take Your Dog to Work Day and Take your Pet to Work Week is also a time to concentrate on your pets health!
