Saturday, June 23rd was National Hydration Day and a recent study conducted on 1000 American adults indicates that it’s likely you’re not getting enough water! According to the study 77% of adult Americans do not think they drink enough water on a daily basis to meet their health needs! Most Americans should be drinking eight 8-ounce glasses of water every day in order to meet basic hydration needs and the vast majority of us are not doing it!
What was also interesting about the study is that there were fairly significant differences among gender and age groups. For example, 27% of men feel like they drink enough water to meet their health needs while only 20% of women feel the same way. When the results are examined by age groups they found that millennials are more likely to always drink enough water during the work day while Baby Boomers are the least likely to be well hydrated. So the moral of the story is that most of us aren’t hydrated enough to maintain optimum health but Baby Boomer women are the most in danger of not getting enough.
While anyone can become dehydrated the condition is especially dangerous for young children and older adults. Older adults in particular naturally have a lower volume of water in their bodies and may have conditions or take medications that increase the risk of dehydration. This means that even minor illnesses, such as infections affecting the lungs or bladder, can result in dehydration in older adults.
It’s also worth noting that thirst isn’t always a reliable early indicator of the body’s need for water. Many people, particularly older adults, don’t feel thirsty until they’re already dehydrated. That’s why it’s important to increase water intake during hot weather or when you’re ill.
