For nearly four decades pet owners all over the world have been using Dr. Willard’s Water® to address a wide variety of ailments. In fact, most of the original work Dr. Willard performed using his Dr. Willard’s Water® involved helping local veterinarians and animals. In the early 1970’s the first veterinarian to work with Dr. Willard on using Willard Water® to treat pets was Gene Wheeler, D.V.M., of Sturgis, South Dakota. After a long discussion with Dr. Willard, Dr. Wheeler agreed to perform some tests and the results were truly amazing.

“My first trials involved spaying dogs,” Dr. Wheeler later recalled. “I would use it as a cleaner, and when done would spray the incision after closure. Two notable facts were observed: reduced inflammation and a definite reduction of capillary hemorrhage.  No side effects were observed.”

Over the following years Dr. Wheeler conducted several other tests with both the Willard Water CLEAR® and the Willard Water DARK®. In every case, definite benefits were noted, and at no time did he observe any undesirable side effects.

In the years since Dr. Wheeler began using Willard Water® many other pet care providers, authors and experts have extolled the virtues of using Willard Water® as part of their pet care routine. For over 30 years Wendy Volhard, an internationally recognized leading authority on health and nutrition for dogs, has been a very strong advocate of using Willard Water® for pets. In Holistic Guide for a Healthy Dog, a book she co-authored with Kerry Brown, D.V.M., she recommends adding diluted Willard Water® DARK to a dog’s drinking water when traveling to keep stress levels under control.

“Taking your own supply of drinking water is preferable,” she says, “but if that is not possible, use what is available on your trip and add 2 tablespoons of diluted Willard Water® to each bowl, so that your dog is not affected by the change.”

Volhard has had very good results with Willard Water® and MRSA, (Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureaus) which is a bacterial infection that is highly resistant to most antibiotics.  MRSA causes a red, swollen and painful area on the skin.

It is now being found frequently on dogs’ ears and on cuts and scrapes on their legs and bodies.  While using antibiotics, adding Willard Water® internally on a daily basis, and spraying Willard Water® onto the sores created by MRSA, healing is not only accelerated, but provides pain relief as well.

C.J. Puotinen, author of Encyclopedia of Natural Pet Care, and another proponent of using Willard Water® with pets, wrote a wonderful article for Whole Dog Journal outlining the many benefits of using Willard Water® as part of a holistic pet care regimen.

“For all animals, Willard Water® seems to act as a whole-body tonic. That is, it’s safe to use in small amounts for long periods of time, during which it apparently helps to bring into balance all of the body’s systems.” Puotinen wrote in Whole Dog Journal, “…holistic practitioners credit the product with amazing abilities to heal and balance. For example, Roger DeHaan, D.V.M., a holistic veterinarian in Kings Mountain, North Carolina, has recommended Willard Water® for his canine patients since 1983.”

Puotinen recommends mixing one fluid ounce (2 tablespoons) of Willard Water® concentrate to a gallon of regular water and using that solution as a good daily drinking water for animals with acute or chronic health problems or for any animals during hot weather or times of stress.

However, for daily maintenance, water for healthy dogs, cats, cattle, and other animals not under stress is far more dilute, such as ¼ ounce (½ tablespoon, or just over 1 teaspoon) concentrate per gallon of water.

Use this solution to fill your dog’s water bowl, which should be available at all times. Add it to dry, canned, or raw food. If you include grain in your dog’s home-prepared diet, consider soaking it overnight in diluted Willard Water® to improve digestibility. To increase the grain’s nutritional content, drain the jar and leave it open and on its side for a day or two. Grind or puree the sprouting grain before adding to food. Leftover pureed grain keeps well in the refrigerator for several days.

Puotinen also advises users to gradually introduce their pets to Willard Water®, giving small dogs 1 to 2 tablespoons of the dilute solution daily, adding it to drinking water or food. Medium-sized dogs receive 4 tablespoons per day, and large or giant breeds start with ½ to ¾ cup (4 to 6 ounces).

“Too much too fast can accelerate the detoxification response,” she writes. “If your dog gets diarrhea, ease off a little until his system catches up. This temporary symptom is the only adverse side effect Dr. DeHaan has seen while treating thousands of dogs with Willard Water.”

Over the last 40 years, Willard Water® users have recommended several applications for using Willard Water® products on pets. Below is a partial list of additional recommendations:
